Mayim and Shishi in the Secret Place of the Most High

With a storm on the horizon, Mayim, a first grader relies on her mother’s lessons of faith. It’s the first day of school and before the kids can even learn each other’s names good, they’re taking cover after tornado sirens go off. While some of her new friends are anxious and overcome with fear, Mayim remembers the scripture her mother reads to her.  She takes refuge in Psalm 91 and rests during nap time while the twister turns. Adventure unfolds with her new friend Jared who upon waking has a similar dream about God’s protection and a new friendship is formed. Mayim’s stuffy Shishi is right beside her the whole time and doesn’t miss a moment of the action. Meet Mayim, Shishi, Mrs. Riles, Jared, and the rest of the class in the first of upcoming Mayim and Shishi series.

Childlike Faith and Grownup Lessons

Mayim grows from an anxious child who fears storms to a confident kid who understands how prayer and community provide shelter. Her friendship with Jared demonstrates empathy and inclusivity, showing moral growth. Mayim decides to embrace and declare the lesson she experienced: that God protects us and that prayer matters. She resolves to tell her friends and to encourage prayer for others, showing growth from private fear to outward confidence. The storm forces Mayim to face her deepest fear (storms and loss of control), and to rely on prayer and friendship rather than her own ability to ‘fix’ things. This emotional nadir sets up the later affirmation with her mother and the renewed conviction that prayer changes things.
